Sometimes it just all works out perfectly…

IMG_5467Ever have those days or even weeks where everything just works out perfectly?  Somehow you get to  school pick up exactly on time, your little one goes to bed like a dream, your boss loves your presentation, your shallot cream sauce comes out amazing for your company and your hair is just working!  (most important). Well.. I am smack dab in the middle of one of those weeks and I am loving it!

So my ‘perfect’ this week has been in the shopping category.  Earlier this week I hit my two favorite antique haunts and scored twice.

Wanna see?……

So I pull up to one of my favorite antique stores and this beauty has just come off her truck from a silk mill up North.  I fell in love instantly.  I knew  I had the perfect place for it in my kitchen and I couldn’t believe my luck (or how dirty it was).

I knew it could be beautiful.

IMG_3066

It never even made it into the store…I know a good thing when I see it and I snatched it up.

IMG_3065

I took it home and gave it a good cleaning and now I have a feeling it will be the hardest working piece in my house… IMG_5466

I needed something for this spot (where I previously had a piece I didn’t love)….. and it fits perfectly

IMG_5467

White mini pumpkins in a distressed fluted bowl…what could be better?

IMG_5468

I think it works ‘perfectly’…what do you think?

IMG_5469

And this is what I meant about the hardest working piece in my house….

IMG_3180IMG_3179

My husband’s reaction to my ‘perfect score’ “it has like 20 drawers, what will you put in them?”  Oh men…Oh husbands…will you ever understand us? Check back with me in like 10 minutes and this will be full …..because can you ever really have enough spoons?

And on to ‘perfection ‘score # 2

Not as big of commitment…. but at another one of my favorite antique stores I found this over the top gilded antique mirror for $20.  It was not exactly my taste but it had good bones. It was super heavy and really substantial and old.  So I snatched it up with some plans.  I decide to paint it white but with very light brush strokes so the gold would peek through a bit.  I didn’t think to take a pic until I was almost done…….

IMG_5458

See it had good bones…but very decorative and very gold.  I love a soft and muted gold but this was not it.

 IMG_5459

By the way the reflection in the mirror is of the bead board on my porch ceiling…(my favorite place to paint)

IMG_5460

The power of a can of white paint….always…every time it woks!

IMG_5463 2

SO it replaced a mirror that I didn’t love as much in my back hall/mudroom.

I love it! ‘Perfect’

Did everything work out perfectly? Dare I say?

In the fall all things seem new….again

I don’t drink pumpkin lattes and I don’t run off to the apple orchard and I do not need to pull out a chunky Ralph Lauren scarf the moment the temperature dips one degree, but I do love myself some fall.   I love the change that fall brings, not just outdoors but indoors as well.  Fall is the perfect time to start anew, to refresh and revitalize yourself and your home.  Fall is the time to pay attention to the corners of your home and yourself that have been neglected far too long.

When Gatsby’s great love Daisy Buchanan asks somewhat longingly, “What will we do today, and then tomorrow, and for the next thirty years?” the response could not be truer…. “Life starts all over again when it gets crisp in the fall.”

So today I decided to start all over…nothing major…just something small……  but this corner is neglected no more…

Where better to start then with your entryway?  That moment when you enter a house you know what it is all about…if the stage has been set.  This is your first opportunity to welcome your guests and it should be reflect the people who live in your home and it should be season appropriate!

So this was my summer entryway.  (look at my peonies!!) Pretty, yet is has to go

Fall has arrived and I needed a refresh… in an hour or so I was done ….

Inspiration:

IMG_3058

I just loved the calm inducing mood of this entryway I had dog eared in a favorite magazine

I kept the gold tray but brought in an old antique mirror to bounce some light around as the days get shorter and the sunlight becomes less and less…

IMG_5401

Add flowers of course…seasonal and beautiful

IMG_5406

To balance the height of the flowers, a beautiful lantern with that

Lucious green color

IMG_5407

And back to that inspiration photo….

IMG_3058

Well don’t I just have a buddha head laying around (No really I do)

IMG_5408

The rule of threes in any space is always beautiful but an entryway its perfect.  A beautiful candle or a lantern, something fresh and alive be it fresh flowers or a potted plant and then something that speaks to you and the homes’ personality and your done!

Welcome guests….welcome fall….Volia!

So find a corner of your house and breath some new life…neglect it no more!!

***Update: The lovely young lady who delivers my dry cleaning said my front entrance was beautiful!  I’ll take a compliment like that any day!

The first days of fall

The last tomato. The last local ear of corn. That last swim…..Its so hard to say goodbye. Until next time Summer…my love

For now…I will embrace the fall.  I will embrace the change of the season. A constant reminder that like the harvest, we come back every year. With every new harvest we start over just a little bit, once again.

So these tomatoes didn’t quite work out……beautiful but aren’t they supposed to be red?

IMG_20170831_193417.jpgBut look at this succulent mini-garden!!!! my husband and daughter created this.  I’m telling you it,  is double the size it was in June. (The secret: sand and pebbles!)

How greatly the change of the season affects some.

First time’s a charm

All though my house and not a creature is stirring…its 10pm the last weekend of summer and my husband and five year old daughter are both sound asleep.  Surely visions of backpacks and pencils dance through her head and as far as my husband goes….who knows.  I am awake and writing my first ever blog post.  At the urging of said husband, I am starting a blog about living, loving, decorating, cooking and all things ‘house’.    Full disclosure; I didn’t really even know what a blog was a year ago or why anyone would have one or want to read one.  Maybe I still don’t understand.  What I do know is that I am often inspired and why shouldn’t inspiration be shared.  So here we go…..

I love when a house glows from the inside.  Telling its story into the night.

The story of my summer hydrangeas is a complicated one. In my neck of the woods nobody’s hydrangeas have looked good in years.  One year we had an early frost, another year an early spring snow storm and then the icicle incident (my husband knocked all the icicles off the porch onto my hydrangea bushes.)  All the trials and tribulations of gardening becomes so worth it with the beauty of a bloom.

And what could be better than that color of blue?
